These games were not about rushing in mind numbing grind to an end game, but rather about enjoying the experience from start to beginning. There were tons of life skills, they were not shallow like majority of MMOs today but rather were deep and rewarding, and they intertwined with other life skills and even combat and character growth in a rewarding way. One big reason was because they really did an amazing job at life skills. These games really made the whole idea of 'fantasy life' amazing.
